Belly Dance Accessories Biography
Tamsyn is a tribal fusion and Vintage Orientale bellydance performer and teacher normally based in Edinburgh, UK, and currently training and living near Boston, MA. Schooled from an early age in ballet, Russian character dance, and modern jazz, she has also cross-trained in yoga, flamenco and martial arts. Tamsyn sees bellydance as an expression of individuality, an outlet for creativity and a rejoicing in the human form.
Tamsyn took her first lesson in bellydance when she was ten years old after her family moved to San Francisco. She started performing with her sister at haflas and parties when she was eleven, and followed her mother to some of the world’s largest bellydance festivals. Her first teacher, Leila, was a highly respected instructor in the Vintage Orientale style and instilled in Tamsyn an admiration and love for this beautiful and empowering art form.
After leaving San Francisco, Tamsyn continued to take bellydance lessons with local teachers in San Diego and London, but not until she moved to Edinburgh and met the close-knit dance community there did she re-discover what, for her, makes bellydancing so special: a network of inspirational and supportive women. In 2007, she started studying intently with premier international instructors, as well as locally with teachers who travelled the world and brought their knowledge back home.
She has a strong background in ballet, Egyptian Oriental and American Turkish bellydance, which brings her dancing a characteristic grace layered with emotional exuberance. Her first love is tribal fusion, and she has travelled the world, in several cases to far-flung hometowns, to study with performers who have rocked the dance world. Influences include Donna Mejia, Laura Monteith, members of the Indigo, Heather Stants, Bozenka and Anasma.
Tamsyn has performed in the UK, Japan, Massachussetts and California at private functions, haflas and weddings, and currently performs regularly around Boston.
