Dance Pole Biography
Name: Shanyn Pollard
Age: 32
Competing as: Professional
Best move: Pheonyx (Reverse Grab to Twisted Grip Handspring)
Trains at: Shanyn’s Artistic Strength Studio in Stoney Creek
Pollard spotted her first pole fitness demonstration six years ago on an episode of Oprah. “I just knew I had to do it,” she recalls. “I started studying it through YouTube before I even purchased a pole. So I learned the fundamentals and broke down the moves.” Whatever her approach, it worked: Pollard was the 2011 Miss Pole Dance Canada Champion and was a finalist in the 2011 World Pole Sport and Fitness Championship held last year in Budapest, Hungary.
Name: Polina Vinogradola
Age: 25
Competing as: Semi-professional
Best move: Cartwheel off the pole

Two and a half years ago, Vinogradola spotted pole dancing pictures posted by a friend online. “I thought it looked cool, so I decided to give it a try.” And so began a love affair with the aerial arts that will see the former ballet dancer compete with the province’s best for a shot at the Miss Pole Dance Canada competition, on October 13, in Vancouver. “It’s physically challenging and difficult to come up with good routines,” she says. “It’s a miracle to see what other people can do.”
